CAELUM GALLERY

Robert Mirek

In his Aluminum Series, Mirek combines his interests in sculpture and painting in freeform relief panels. The artist zig-zags between allusions to various tribal arts to Art Nouveau and organic structures. His hybrid works seem like wildly inventive tortoise shells, as though the driving force behind diversity in nature and not natural selection but sheer fun. As vigorously designed as the pieces are, they have an improvised look to them. The combined use of silicone rubber, etched aluminum, paint and overall bold technique reminds the viewer of stained glass work. For all their amusing qualities, the works have the look of votive objects, which again refers to tribal art. In any case, Mirek knows how to entertain while he provides dignified objects for contemplation.
